Ten years passed without a spawn of Blake Edwards' misguided post-Peter Panthers — until he materialized with another bastardization: the love child of Jacques Clouseau, also a police officer and a bungler, played by the black hole of comedy, Roberto Benigni. The flick will appeal to pink panther series and Peter Sellers fans. You'd swear there really was nitrous oxide in the room. It wasn't long before the lead, David Niven, realized his film had been stolen from under him. Story: The trademark of The Phantom, a renowned jewel thief, is a glove left at the scene of the crime.
There was no end to the ways he could make you laugh; from the subtlest expression-- an eye averted or perhaps the slight raising of an eyebrow-- to the broadest slapstick, it was all within his personal domain, and he was the Master. The animated title sequence is the undisputed high point of this movie, a developing trend over the several preceding vehicles. There is more fun with botched assassination attempts on Clouseau and a lot of humour is created from Dreyfus thinking Clouseau is dead. But, true to the character, Steve Martin does make it his own, and actually pulls it off pretty effectively. Undistinguished, go-through-the-motions bedlam follows until Jacques Clouseau is found, portrayed by Roger Moore! The second half with Joanna Lumley interviewing characters like Sir Charles Lytton and Hercule LaJoy from previous films makes for a nice tribute to Peter Sellers and his amazing portrayal of Inspector Clouseau. His intention is to give a diversion to the press, while he uses his best men to chase the killer and thief.
That was the gift-- and the genius-- of Peter Sellers. Much has been said of Steve Martin in the Clouseau role, treading on Sellers' domain. It was typical Kevin Kline. Several of the Clouseau sequences are amusing, but the bulk is desperation strokes to exploit Sellers. Many of the gags are predictable as is the plot , but what really makes them work is Martin's reactions which I really think was the key to Peter Seller's portrayal as well.
Sadly, we're starting over with Clouseau's previous cases and personal history ignored. Inspector Clouseau, an expert on The Phantom's exploits, feels sure that he knows where The Phantom will strike next and leaves Paris for Switzerland, where the famous Lugashi jewel 'The Pink Panther' is going to be. Clouseau seems hopeless, until his various mistakes and misjudgments miraculously put him on the real killer's trail. He has always been good with physical humor, and this film is no exception. The actor and the director improvised new Clouseau material. The lush, wacky tale of the voluptuous Pink Panther diamond had, it seems, created another gem. Luckily, Chief Inspector Dreyfus Kevin Kline has a plan: assign his most intelligent, most driven officers to track down the thieves in secret, while publicly assigning the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau Steve Martin as head of the case.
We're witnessing creative burnout, especially with Sellers in a Brando fat suit and 1950s Mafioso threads. Perhaps the funniest Pink Panther film. This slapstick contains funny scenes and never slowdown. And there, in that briefest of moments upon the screen, you know-- beyond the shadow of a doubt-- what is about to transpire. Sellers rushed to location on a Friday and the shoot began Monday. The fifth and final Sellers appearance as Clouseau or so Peter thought has the world's ruthless assassins plotting his demise. Memorable moments include Clouseau pretending to be a telephone repairman and Dreyfus in the lunatic asylum. The story goes that when Ava Gardner left the cast abruptly, Peter Ustinov followed. This release is the fourth part of Closeau series and an enjoyable comedy starred by the great Peter Sellers as the inept and bungler Inspector of the French Surete.

Well, when you're used to seeing Peter Sellers as Clouseau, it's just difficult to view anyone else in that role. Herbert Lom parodying his ¨Phantom of opera¨ personage is excellent. Where Clouseau was once an innocent, simply employed in the wrong line of work, here he's on a path to increasing insanity, outlandish disguises, explosive gags, and a strange, thick accent he never had before.
Lively and atmospheric music by habitual Henry Mancini and magnificent opening and ending cartoon titles by Richard Williams. However Clouseau has already solved the mystery. Needing a warm body, a desperate Edwards hired Sellers. Peter Sellers is at his best. However, he does not know who The Phantom really is, or for that matter who anyone else really is. The most ridiculous but probably also the most fun Pink Panther movie. In this one, former Chief Inspector Dreyfus Herbert Lom is about to be released from the mental hospital-- in which he has resided since being driven crazy by Clouseau-- when on the very afternoon of his hearing he is visited by none other than Clouseau himself, who has come to speak on behalf of his former boss.
